We don't seem to learn from history.

The fall of the Roman Empire and other civilizations began with crumbling morals.

"Most Americans believe that gays and lesbians have a right to live as they choose, but they don't believe they have a right to redefine marriage for our entire society. Americans want our laws to send a positive message to children about marriage, family and their future," said Matt Daniels, president of the Virginia-based Alliance for Marriage.

A CBS News survey of 1,038 adults conducted earlier this month found that 30 percent said same-sex couples should be allowed to legally marry, 28 percent favored civil unions, and 36 percent said there should be no legal recognition of the relationship.

"Marriage is the most universal social institution, transcending all racial, religious and political boundary lines. As the largest 'minority' community in California, we have voted with our feet in rejecting the false claims that destruction of marriage represents the advancement of civil rights," said the Rev. I'm sorry if it offends. Marriage was ordained of God. It is not merely a man-made institution. A civil union might be considered that. Fix the problems such as health insurance, personally-appointed next of kinship, housing or other concerns, but don't change marriage for all of society. This is not about prejudice but about redefinition of a sacred institution. Are they saying they can't declare their love unless it is under the sanctity of marriage? So, they feel they must devalue what marriage is for everyone and risk civil interference in religion when they try to mandate what churches must do (like interfering with Catholic Services adoption rules that required parents to be man/woman). This move is very short-sighted. By choosing a homosexual life style, they choose NOT to be married. That is their choice - you don't change the rules because you want them to fit your choice.

It's interesting that when all the hoopla was going on about the FLDS raid in Texas, people were outraged that polygamists were not prosecuted since bigamy is against the law (even though a man can have several simultaneous affairs and the polygamous wives were not legally wed to him). Well, start changing what marriage is and pretty soon anything goes. You can't dictate that a person can't have more than one wife (or husband) if marriage is ultimately redefined. It would be wrong to condemn one variation and not another - you could even marry your sister. We're heading for a chaotic mess doing whatever "feels good."
