A room for the kids

Jon, his friend and I have been working on this room for several weeks.  All the old wallpaper border was removed (and it was NOT the strippable kind!), the walls were repaired and painted, carpets  were cleaned and we added some colorful decorations.  Jenn donated the dresser and other gifts came from our friend, Heather.  We are so excited to see the kids soon - it's been a year!

Day 19 - The Final Roof Finishing

I know, I said finished before, but that was the house roof. These are the bay window roofs. Jon is finishing them right now!

Day 18 Roof

The remaining bits of roof are above the two bay windows upstairs. Today Jon stripped and prepped both and completed the shingling on one.

Day 17 Roof - Finished!!!

Ken and Fred spent the whole day finishing my roof. This is the finished product!
From this angle it doesn't look like there's that much more to do but on the other side, where Ken's working, there are five roof vents to work around and on this side two skylights.
This is the part they had finished before. It's a lot of work doing the valleys and around these additional five vents, antenna and other protrusions.
Of course they also had to do around the chimney.




Fred has been amazing helping me so much when he has his own house to work on.
Aubrey and I went to help Jenn since Fred was working here. This is the nice, finished roof I came home to.
We actually have the two segments over the bay windows upstairs to do. I think Jon will get time to finish that next week. I'm very happy with the way it looks and structurally it is a quality job!

Day 15 & 16 Roof

Ken worked yesterday and again today. It is a big roof and lots of work, particularly because it was in such bad shape, they removed a swamp cooler, etc.

Day 14 Roof

Ken worked today, but I didn't get home until after dark and no photos, but the dumpster is gone!

Day 12 Roof - Good Old Fashioned Christianity!

Some more of the wonderful men of my ward came to work on the next phase of the roof. Last night the family had removed the old swamp cooler and scraped the old shingles. This morning Steve, Fred, Rob and Dennis, Conrad and Alan from the ward came to do the work of prepping it for the shingles - resheeted the entire upper level, like they did the lower level, placed the ice shield, flashing and feltech. They were finished by 2:00 PM! Shingles arrive on Monday and we can do that over the coming days/weeks as we get time. This is Christianity as it is supposed to be. I pray for blessings for these men and their families for their selfless service!

Now these are real men! So nice of their wives and children to share them.
I will finish cleaning up below and I can get rid of the dumpster in my driveway! I'm over budget but I have a fine roof now that's good for 30 years.

Day 11 Roof

Today Ken placed sheets of plywood over the new roof so it wouldn't be damaged during phase 2 - the upper level. Fred, Jenn and family, Nat, Rob and family all helped. They removed the old swamp cooler which is pretty hard on roofs and I didn't use it. I had liked having a backup in case my AC goes out but it's not worth keeping it up there and working around it for the roofing.
Even 7 year old Alex helped haul the old shingles across the roof and into the dumpster.

Emma hauling shingles over the plywood protectors. We had one minor casualty when Olivia tripped on the extension cord and skinned her knew, elbows, and hands. At least she didn't fall off the roof. It made me nervous for sure.

Day 10 and Roof weekend?

Jon finished the ridge cap on the biggest part of the roof. It's been pretty nice weather but wouldn't you know it, now that we're going into the weekend it would get hot agin. That's just no fun on the roof so the best time to work is morning and evening. Ken says he can probably be OK to come back tomorrow to start stripping the upper level as long as we know there is enough help on Saturday to get it sealed up. He has to work that day of course, as does Jon. Steve and Aubrey are doing Lagoon bounce back for Asher's birthday party. I am hoping some others can make it. Need to still get supplies too by Saturday. Truck? I guess we need to know ASAP.

Day 8 & Day 9 Roof

Finishing the main house today(Tuesday)! Ken was here bright and early. Update: Ditto (Wednesday). Looking for a crew to strip shingles and my old swamp cooler from the upstairs roof so I can get rid of the dumpster soon. Ken needs a break for a few days while we do that. I have a couple appointments on Friday (hair and new crown on my tooth) but otherwise I'll try to get up there. Saturday too. All are welcome !!!

I actually got up on the roof for a while. I'm minimally useful and did best with running to Lowe's for more supplies.
My granddaughter, Olivia made a point of catching me on the ladder to prove I really did it!
