Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure®
In 2008, Susan G. Komen for the Cure celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Komen Race for the Cure, the largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world, with well over 1 million participants since 2005.
The Komen Race for the Cure Series raises significant funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrates breast cancer survivorship, and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease.
I will be manning a booth at the Health Expo at the U.P Railroad Depot at the Gateway this afternoon in conjunction with Saturday's race. Last year I really enjoyed it. One of the other booths I appreciated is from a foundation that creates books for cancer survivors to tell their stories. While adults can also participate, it's especially nice for children who have or did have cancer. They can write their own story, complete with drawings, etc. and then the company publishes it in hardback for them to keep, free of charge thanks to an anonymous endowment gift. So, if you know anyone who would benefit from this, send them down. I'm sure they will be there again this year, along with other displays about health. I have lost three good friends to breast cancer so this is a cause I believe in personally.
