It's for my health!

Sometimes, they say, the body knows what it needs for good health and craves it. OK, I say that with a little bit of chocolate-covered tongue-in-cheek... You can read the whole story if you have access to Medscape Nurses News but you'll probably see it elsewhere too. Basically:

ZURICH (Reuters) Jul 17 - The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has ruled that cocoa powder and dark chocolate can help people improve blood circulation - a claim made by Barry Callebaut, the world's largest maker of chocolate products.

The Swiss group, which supplies food companies such as Nestle and Hershey with cocoa and chocolate products, said on Tuesday it had provided evidence to EFSA that eating 10 grams of dark chocolate or its equivalent in cocoa that were high in flavanols helped blood flow.

If the European Commission signs off on the EFSA ruling, the company and its customers would have the right to use the health claim on packaging for products such as chocolate drinks, cereal bars and biscuits, the company said.

"As the first company receiving such a health claim, we see new market potential both for us and for our customers," Chief Executive Juergen Steinemann said in a statement.

For the clinical studies it conducted to back up the claim, Barry Callebaut said it used a special process to make cocoa products that maintains the flavanols, which are usually mostly destroyed during conventional chocolate-making.

In an opinion posted on the EFSA website, a scientific panel concluded that a cause and effect relationship had been established between the consumption of cocoa flavanols and the maintenance of normal vasodilation.

Farewell Party for me!

My friends at work threw me a chocolate party to say good-bye.  I've been there almost 8 years and they were kind enough to remember my favorite things and people.  My partner, Kathy, took these photos so she's not here, though she was the party planner.  She also missed getting pics of the spread!

The bright side of chocolate

Amani Chocolate
February is National Celebration of Chocolate Month or National Chocolate Lover's Month - depending on where you look.  A friend (and giver of chocolate) reminded me.  Of course to me, every month would be this.  "Chocolate (in moderation) may contribute to a healthy diet!" (K-State Nutrition Services)  Read more fun facts and history of this delectable indulgence here.  All chocolate is NOT created equal but clearly there is much variety in preferences between people!  My favorite candy would includes nuts (but not nougat or fluffy stuff) inside.  Good truffles with smooth fillings I like but prefer not the ones rolled in plain cocoa.  OK, I do discriminate a bit but in a pinch almost anything will do except the waxy stuff and Tootsie Rolls just don't count.

I do believe it is a mood lifter and aphrodisiac.  What could be more romantic than sharing great chocolate with someone you love?

I won!

I entered the Mom Bloggers contest sponsored by Hershey's and they're sending me a Halloween Gift Pack. I think this means they're buying the treats for me to give out this year. Hope it's enough for my work day care too! (See last week's post about this)

I do love chocolate!! At this time of year one of my favorites is Hershey kisses with almonds in festive fall wrapping. They have a pumpkin spice and caramel apple flavors this year but I crave the cherry cordial or raspberry.

I knew it! And, another of Utah's claims to fame

April 8, 2010 — The largest observational study so far to examine the association between chocolate consumption and risk of cardiovascular disease has found that those who ate the most chocolate--around 7.5 g per day--had a 39% lower risk of myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke than individuals who ate almost no chocolate (1.7 g per day).

Lead author Dr Brian Buijsse (German Institute of Human Nutrition, Nuthetal, Germany) told heartwire : "This shows that habitual consumption of chocolate is related to a lower risk of heart disease and stroke that is partly explained by blood-pressure reduction. The risk reduction is stronger for stroke than for MI, which is logical because it appears that chocolate and cocoa have a pronounced effect on blood pressure, and BP is a higher risk factor for stroke than for MI." Buijsse and colleagues report their findings online March 31, 2010 in the European Heart Journal.

OK, problem is they aren't yet ready to recommend daily amounts but it will be less than what I want.  Hey, more is better, right? (Ha ha)   Personally I think the benefits come from how good it makes you feel when you eat it - relax, enjoy!!!

Chocolate Heals - I knew it!

Eating Dark Chocolate May Lower Stress Hormones, Researchers Say
By Jennifer Warner ~WebMD Health News

WebMD ~ so it must be true :)
Nov. 13, 2009 -- Those stress-induced chocolate cravings may be justified after all. A new study shows that eating dark chocolate may lower levels of stress hormones in people feeling stressed out.

Researchers found that eating the equivalent of one average-sized dark chocolate candy bar (1.4 ounces) each day for two weeks reduced levels of the stress hormone cortisol as well as the “fight-or-flight” hormones known as catecholamines in highly stressed people.

The findings add to a growing number of recently discovered potential health benefits of dark chocolate. For example, cocoa has been found to be rich in a class of antioxidants called flavonoids, which have been linked to a number of health benefits.

Researchers are also investigating other compounds in dark chocolate that may offer other health benefits, such as improved insulin sensitivity, reduced blood pressure, and improved mood.

Premium Chocolate

Click post title for a story on a local chocolatier. As a big-time chocolate-lover (is there any other kind of candy?) I appreciate fine chocolate, even when I can't afford to buy it. This is a local guy who is winning awards for his chocolate. Now I'm going to have to buy some and try it out.
