A new study finds that if you want to climb the [corporate ladder] rungs, you have to act like a man... but not all the time. (Stanford Graduate School of Business)  

Researchers at Stanford studied 132 business-school grads over 8 years and found that women who showed a lot of masculine traits—aggressiveness, assertiveness and confidence—but who could also sense when to dial them down, were promoted more often than male and female peers.

In the business world, women who are aggressive, assertive, and confident but who can turn these traits on and off, depending on the social circumstances, get more promotions than either men or other women, according to a recent study coming out of the Stanford Graduate School of Business. The research suggests that for women to be successful they must simultaneously present themselves as self–confident and dominant while tempering these qualities with displays of communal characteristics. 

"To be successful, you must be assertive and confident, but if you are aggressive as a woman you are sometimes punished for behaving in ways that are contrary to the feminine stereotype. Such negative response to assertive women has been labeled the "backlash effect."

Speaking of "backlash effect" - in the personal, romantic element women are advised against putting forth "masculine" qualities.   In truth, do men really want smart, clever women?  I cite as a scientific example of my own - The movie, Something's Gotta Give (with Diane Keaton, Jack Nicholson, Keanu Reeves in an interesting love triangle - no make that quadrangle) - I love it when Erica's sister (who works at the university in Women's Issues) expounds on the all-too-common problem of older men overlooking their female peers for love and companionship in favor of younger women they find sexy and alluring.  The fascinating, educated and accomplished woman (like her sister) "sits at home night after night after night..."  Of course in the process she is becoming more and more accomplished but not getting a lot of dating action.

Today was an exceptionally nice day. The weather was fantastic and life is good! I think I have a serious case of spring fever and my thoughts turned to kissing and being "kissable." Hope you had a good day too.

Kissing Frogs (From Random Thoughts Blog by Lightfeather)

So sometimes you have to kiss
a lot of frogs
before you find a prince
and other times you
never find a prince
even then.

And then once in a
while someone just
happens in
when you least
expect it
and makes you laugh
like you have
never laughed before
and makes you feel
like you have never
felt before
and for that
time it becomes
magical.

And you are not worried
about how long it
will last
because maybe it will
not last more than
the next day
or maybe the next month
so you make no plans
on it
but for the time being
it is simply the way
it is supposed to be
and it just seems
like a little taste
of heaven.

Spring Fever

MAY DAY! I'm so glad spring is officially here. I was even happy to be able to mow my lawn the last couple of weeks. It was great to be able to get out there again. Winters can be so long!

Today when I went walking as I usually do on my lunch break, I was feeling pretty high. The weather was perfect and I noticed especially how the breeze would create flutters of tiny round seed pods from the trees that almost looked like warm snowflakes blowing in the air. They would settle on the water and the river would quietly float them along. They covered the ground on either side of the walking path where they caught in the grasses and were so thick you could shovel them. How amazing - there were billions of them. It's a wonder we don't have a regular forest here! I guess only the lucky few really get to become trees. Surely they all aspire to such a fate! But even those that don't created a lovely sight for me today. I was grateful to not be plagued with allergies so I can always enjoy the spring without such a nuisance as many people must deal with. The trees almost all had leaves or blossoms - a few were still sparce, but looking alive nevertheless. The most amazing crop of wisteria lines the path. It has lavender grape-like clusters that are so thick and unbelievably fragrant. (I liked it so much last year I bought one and planted it in my back yard. I actually have one cluster on that little bush this year!) It was such a nice experience - hated to go back to work. What a shame to be stuck in an office on such a day as this. Enjoy!
