Out with the soda!

Two or more sugary sodas a week increased the risk of developing pancratic cancer according to this long-term Singapore study which included 60,000 people. It was discovered they had an 87% greater risk of developing this cancer. This is sobering. Read about it here. Kind of removes the "die" from "diet" in my book. Of course others will say that artificial sweeteners...

The connection between sugar and pancreatic cancer makes sense: insulin, which helps the body digest sugar, is made in the pancreas. Researchers suspect that sugary soda interferes with the body's insulin levels, which then contributes to cancerous cell growth in the pancreas.

Diabetes, another illness in which the body's insulin production is compromised, is a known risk factor for pancreatic cancer. The onset of diabetes later in life can also be an early symptom.
I also saw where you can say "I love you" with just a small bit of chocolate, not a whole box. Just sayin'

OK, I have to spread the word...

January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month! This year 11,000 women will be diagnosed and 4,000 will die.

Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women worldwide and is caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). Please help ARHP support Cervical Cancer Awareness Month by learning and sharing information about HPV and cervical cancer, the importance of the Pap and HPV tests, and how the HPV vaccine can reduce the incidence of cervical cancer. Visit ARHP for more information:

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Get the facts and get screened!

The American Cancer Society recommends that all women 40 or older have a mammogram every year to detect breast cancer early. This is true even if a woman has no history of breast cancer in her family.

Mammography is the best way to detect breast cancer in its earliest, most treatable stage; an average of one to three years before a woman can feel a lump. Mammography also locates cancers too small to be felt during a clinical breast exam.

Although more women in Utah die of breast cancer than any other cancer, most women who are diagnosed with breast cancer will survive the disease because of early detection and advances in treatment. Nearly 100% of women diagnosed with Stage I breast cancer will survive five years or longer after their diagnosis. Unfortunately, that percentage drops to 20% for women diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer. Making the time to get screened can save your life. (Source: Healthy Utah)

Jarred has been cancer free for 20 years!

Family and friends, old and new, joined the celebration at Carolyn & Gene's gorgeous home. She always knew how to throw a party! We're so happy to see this survivor and know that sometimes we get a victory.
