Family Care International urges you to watch the newsmagazine show, NOW on PBS, tonight, Friday, January 29th.
A NOW team was in Haiti, working on a story about maternal health, on the day that the calamitous earthquake struck. What they then saw firsthand was the way that natural disaster, in addition to leaving lives and institutions in ruin, also exacerbated a much more common, ongoing, and lethal emergency in Haiti: dying during childbirth. Challenges in transportation, poverty, education, and lack of access to quality health care contribute to Haiti having the highest maternal mortality rate in the Western Hemisphere, a national crisis even before the earthquake.
Family Care International works to make childbearing and raising safer in the world.
